An over 35-hour standoff with an armed woman barricaded in a car on a busy highway ended with Virginia police taking the woman into custody early Thursday.
The sprawling incident began at around 11 a.m. Tuesday when Fairfax police conducted a welfare check for a woman reported missing out of Maryland, WTOP-TV reports. During the investigation, police encountered another woman who claimed she'd been kidnapped.
That led to police to a vehicle involved in the alleged abduction. A short chase ensued between officers and the vehicle, ending on Richmond Highway when the woman driving showed she was armed.
Police shut down a part of the roadway, and negotiators were brought in for the ensuing standoff. The woman was provided with food, water and cigarettes throughout the standoff, and police continued to communicate with her.
"I'm working with you," negotiators were heard saying to the woman. "You got to work with me."
The standoff finally ended shortly after midnight Thursday when the woman was taken into custody. At some point, the woman posted on social media that she wasn't involved in a kidnapping and she would never hurt anyone.
